On August 9, 2016, Walter S. Johnson, Sr. passed peacefully from this life to the next. Family and friends were always near during his short illness. A special thanks to his sister-in-law, Anna May Lloyd, for her help. Walter was born the oldest of eleven siblings on February 21, 1933 in Bridgeton, New Jersey. He married the love of his life, Alice, on April 6, 1953 in Pennsville, New Jersey. Walter was a Navy Veteran serving from 1952-1956. After his service to our country, he began a long career with Anchor Hocking in Salem, New Jersey. He moved to Illinois in 1966 for his job, and retired as a night supervisor. Soon after, he became a custodian for the Lake Villa School District. He loved spending time with his family-camping, swimming, hiking, etc. In his later years, he enjoyed gardening in his large backyard. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and uncle who will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Alice; daughter, Kathleen (Jim) Gilliland; sons, Walter Jr. (Charmain) Johnson and William (Maria) Johnson. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, five brothers, and one sister. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sandra Pierce, and four brothers. Visitation is Friday, August 12, 2016 from 3 pm-4 pm at WARREN FUNERAL HOME, 1475 N. Cemetery Rd., Gurnee. Funeral services are Friday at 4 pm at the funeral home. Inurnment will be private at Warren Cemetery, Chapel of Peace Mausoleum, Gurnee. Donations may be made to the Lake Villa Rescue Squad.
