Sigurd Nelson

Sigurd Johann Nelson, 89, of Aurora, Colorado, passed away on January 22, 2019 in Denver, Colorado.

He was born on February 25, 1929 to the late Carl and Amy (Peterson) Nelson in Manhattan, Kansas.  On August 21, 1954 he married the former Dianne Hatfield.  Sigurd was ordained in 1955 and served as a Lutheran pastor before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1959 as a Lutheran Chaplain and serving until his retirement.  He was a member of the Augustana Lutheran Church in Denver, Colorado where he was a long time member of the choir.  Sigurd was an avid birdwatcher and a member of the Colorado Ornithology Club.

Sigurd is survived by his wife Dianne, his 3 children Mark Nelson, Lance Nelson, and Beth Nelson, his daughter-in-law Debra Nelson and his grandson Carl Nelson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Carl Nelson, Jr.

Visitation will be on Saturday, February 2, 2019 from 10:00 to 11:00A.M. at Warren Funeral Home located at 1475 N. Cemetery Rd. in Gurnee, Illinois.  Services will be at 11:00 A.M. with the Rev. Mark Rallenhagen officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Sigurd’s name be made to the ELCA Scholarship Fund for Leaders, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, P.O. Box 1809, Merrifield, VA 22116-8009.

Burial will be at Warren Cemetery in Gurnee, Illinois.
