Shirley Porter

Shirley M. Porter, 82, of Waukegan, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at Vista East Medical Center.

She was born on March 9, 1938 to Stanley and Josephine (Gerzel) Schuster in Waukegan, Illinois. She attended grade school at North School and Waukegan Township HS and graduated from North Chicago High School in 1955. She graduated Grant Hospital School of Nursing and earned her BS Degree in Nursing from College of St Francis. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Grant Hospital, Cook County Hospital, Lake County Hospital, Lake Forest Hospital, St. Therese Hospital, Victory Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 2000.

She was a member of St Marys, KSKJ Lodges, Steel Workers Retirees Club, Belvidere Seniors, Bertrand Bowling league and played bingo at Our Lady of Humility Church.

Shirley is survived by her daughters Sandra (Byron) Dunkel, Laura Govekar; grandchildren Stacey (Andrew) Dalen, Robyn Dunkel, Lauren Govekar; great-grandchildren; Anthony Dunkel and Rylee Dalen.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, sister Sheila Jakaitis (Jake) and son-in-law Richard Govekar.

Special thanks to her grade school friends and former co-workers for their support during her illness.

Visitation will be from 2-6 pm on Wednesday, Jan 27 at Warren Funeral Home 1475 Cemetery Rd. Gurnee. Funeral services and burial will be private.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in accordance with current State of Illinois resurgence mitigations, all guests will be required to wear a face mask at all times.  There will be a maximum of 25 people allowed in the funeral home at a time and proper social distancing must be practiced.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Shirley's name.
