Robert Wyer Whiton, 82, of Gurnee passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 in Waukegan. He was born on June 29, 1928 in Evanston to the late Herbert Starkes Whiton and Edith Harris (Wyer) Whiton. On January 17, 1959 in Chicago, Robert married Eileen Partington.
He is survived by his daughter, Colleen (William) Dornbusch of Antioch; son, Dennis Robert Whiton of Round Lake Heights; eleven grandchildren, Stephen Whiton, Jr., Jeffrey Whiton, Andrew Whiton, Heather Whiton, Katherine Dornbusch, Alexander Whiton, Kyle Dornbusch, Sean Whiton, Kristopher Dornbusch, Megan Whiton, Rebecca Whiton and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife of 43 years who died on November 19, 2002, Eileen Whiton; son, Stephen Grant Whiton, Sr., daughter, Christine Edith Whiton, brother, Russell Whiton and sister, Dorothy Persons.
Robert was a Retired Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force Auxiliary with over sixty years of service, a former Sergeant First Class in the United States Army during the Korean War, and a dedicated member of the American Legion Post #711 in Gurnee where he served as a member of the post Honor Guard. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association, and the Illinois Railway Museum.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 10am at First Christian Church, 6080 Gages Lake Rd., (½ way between Hunt Club Rd. and Hwy. 21) Gurnee, IL with Pastor David Bondurant officiating. Military Honor Service and interment at 11:30am at Warren Cemetery, 1475 N. Cemetery Rd., Gurnee, IL.
