Margarita Lopez, 73, of Waukegan, a strong, courageous woman, bold to the very end, lost her 6 year battle with stage 4 breast cancer Sunday, August 30, 2015 at home surrounded by her loving family & friends. She was born October 25, 1941 in Puerto Rico. On June 21, 1958 in Puerto Rico, Margarita married the love of her life, Luis A. Lopez. Margarita was a loving, generous soul who was always willing to help others, even people she didn't know, especially providing and involved with the needs of her family and grandchildren. She was a great cook, bargain hunter, penny wise, bold for a cause, and always wanted to provide a better life for her family. She believed in the power of education, and at the age of 37, obtained her GED, "it's never too late." She retired from Abbott Laboratories where she worked as a Quality Control Inspector for over 25 years, was an active member of the Puerto Rican Society, where she chaired the Edwin Montano Scholarship Fund Raising Drive for several years and held various Board Roles. In addition, she also supported many community service projects related to helping to feed and clothe those in need. We will always remember her. She leaves to cherish her memory, husband of 57 years, Luis A. Lopez; children, Luis G. (Adele) Lopez, Dianne Lystlund, William A. (Janine) Lopez and Osvaldo Lopez; maternal uncle, Gregorio Serrano Nieves; brothers and sisters, Miguel A., Jr. (Julianita) Gonzalez, Jose (Miriam) Gonzalez, Carmen Gloria Gonzalez, William Gonzalez and Rafael Gonzalez; 17 grandchildren, Mykel A. Lopez, Brandon L. Lopez, Jessica N. (Brandon) Council, Adam W. (Erica) Lopez, April M. (William) Welch, Stefanie M. (Ryan) Ferguson, Benjamin D. Lopez, Gabriel T. Lopez, Olivia R. Lopez, Elizabeth J. Lopez, Micah A. Lopez, Evan D. Lopez, Samuel G. Lopez, Jana Mae Lopez, Alisha Smith (Craig), Sheena Pape and Terry "T.D." (Kelli) Davis; great grandchildren, Chloe C. Pape, Penny Lane Smith, Halle N. Council, Sloane M. Council, Luca R. Davis, Maxwell C. Smith, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Miguel A., Sr. and Carmen (Serrano) Gonzalez; son-in-law, Michael A. Lystlund; brother, Peter Gonzalez and sister, Antonia Gonzalez de Oquendo.
