Mackie Deneen Henson, age 81 of Waukegan, IL, passed away on Friday, October 13, 2017 at the Grove at the Lake nursing home in Zion, IL, born in Hardin County IL, on November 26, 1935 to Frank and Mammie Henson.
Mack graduated from Pope County High School in Golconda, IL in 1954. He joined the Navy in Sept 1954. After boot camp he began his Navy career as a Gunner's Mate serving aboard the US Morgan County LST 1048, USS Kent County LST 855, USS Lofberg DD 759, LCU Div. 13. He then decided to change his career field to the nuclear rate. After attending school, he reported to duty at Weapons Station Clarksville Base, TN. He then served on the USS Observation Island AE 154, then to Weapons Station Lake Mead, Las Vegas, NV. Back to sea duty on the USS Nereus AS 13, then to the USS Proteus AS17 home ported in Guam. In November 1977 he ended his Navy career after 23 years at NTC Great Lakes. He then began his civil service career at the Veterans Hospital North Chicago, IL, as a Police Officer, then as Fire and Safety Specialist. He then transferred to the Great Lakes Fire Department as Asst. Chief Fire Inspector, he ended his civil service career in the NTC Safety Office in May 1998.
He married the love of his life Ruth (Gangstad) a Navy Hospital Corpsman on January 7, 1956, at Bainbridge, MD, where they both were attending school. Mack loved his wife, daughters, dogs, and family, not always in that order.
Mack is survived by his, wife Ruth, daughters Suzan Henson, Winthrop Harbor, IL., Theresa (Duane) Schaan, Grenora, ND, grandchildren Rachael (Scott) Studsrud, Williston, ND, Ryan (Sarah) Schaan Las Vegas, NV, Stacy (Tyson) Follman, York, ND, great grandchildren Sawyer & Sean Studsrud and Leila Follmon. Brother Billy (Betty) Henson Elgin, IL. Also, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded by his parents, brothers Coy Gene, Jimmy and an infant sister.
Friends and Family may visit on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Warren Funeral Home, 1475 N Cemetery Rd., Gurnee, IL 60031 from noon until 2:00PM. Services will begin at 2:00PM with Chaplin Anthony Harris presiding.
Burial will take place Thursday, October 26, 2017 at the Grenora Cemetery with military honors, in Grenora, North Dakota.
