Luis Antonio Lopez

Luis Antonio Lopez, 89, of Waukegan, passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2024, surrounded by loving family and friends. He was born June 14, 1934, in Quebradillas, Puerto Rico. Luis married the love of his life, Margarita Gonzalez Serrano, on June 21, 1958, in Puerto Rico. He will be remembered through the legacy of his children and grandchildren and the deep ties he knit within his Puerto Rican community. Luis will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

As a young man, Luis served in the U.S. Army from the years 1954 to 1962. This included 3 years of active duty during the Korean War, and 5 subsequent years serving in the Army Reserve. During his time in the Reserve, he worked as a police officer and plumber in Puerto Rico.  Luis was awarded the National Defense Service Medal for his military career.

In 1967, Luis and his family moved to the U.S. He worked at Goodyear for several years until going into business with his brother-in-law Marcos Montano. Eventually, he worked at Abbott Laboratories and later retired as a supervisor in Facility Services. 

Luis had a passion for baseball. As a young man, he played semi-professional baseball in Puerto Rico, and he was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Another passion of his was playing and competing in domino tournaments.  He also loved camping with family and friends.

Luis was committed to his community.  He served the Puerto Rican Society in Waukegan as a volunteer to support the yearly college scholarship fundraiser and the weekly “Bingo Night”.  Additionally, he served as Manager/Treasurer for the Puerto Rican Society Federal Credit Union.


Luis is survived by his children: Luis G. (Adele) Lopez, Dianne Lystlund (Robert Scharding), William A. (Janine) Lopez, Osvaldo Lopez, and Maria del Carmen Roman (Angel Misla); 20 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Margarita Lopez; his parents Gregorio Lopez and Maria Lugo; his sisters Efigenia Lopez, Ana Lopez and Tomasa Lopez-Montano, his grandson Brandon L. Lopez, and his son-in-law Michael A. Lystlund.

Friends and family will meet for visitation on Friday, February 16, 2024, from 11 AM-1 PM at Warren Funeral Home, 1475 N. Cemetery Road, Gurnee, IL. The Funeral Service will begin at 1 PM. A private Interment will be observed at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Luis's name to the Edwin Montano Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Puerto Rican Society of Waukegan, 150 S. Sheridan Road, Waukegan, IL 60085 are greatly appreciated.
