Lester E. Watkins, 88, of Zion, passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in North Chicago. He was born on November 12, 1921 in Watertown, NY. On July 8, 1944 in Oakland, CA, Lester married Beatrice Hahn.
He is survived by his six loving children, Joy Watkins of Indio, CA, Jackie (Kent) Divelbiss of Wadsworth, Steve (Jacky) Watkins of Austin, TX, Scott Watkins of Springfield, IL, Judy (Vern) Hendrickson of Thurmont, MD, Jill (Dave) Devall of Waukegan; nineteen grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren; sister, Phyllis McConnell of PA and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Bessie (Cook) Watkins, beloved wife of 61 years, Beatrice Watkins who died on May 3, 2006, brother, George Watkins, sister, Marion Sells and great-grandson, Andrew Haunsperger.
Lester was a lifelong member of the American Legion. He served as a Navy Corpman with the 1st Marine Division during WWII. He loved fishing, was an avid bowler and loved to travel with his wife across country in an RV.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 15, 2010 from 1-2 pm at WARREN FUNERAL HOME, 1475 N. Cemetery Rd., Gurnee. A memorial service will take place on Sunday at 2 pm following the visitation at the funeral home. Lester will be interred with his wife in upper New York State at a later date.
Donations may be made to the VA Medical Center in honor of Lester Watkins.
