Leroy Long, 81, of Zion passed away on Monday, July 26, 2021 at Vista East Medical Center. He was born July 26, 1940 in Widener, Arkansas to Gillie and Beulah Mae Long. He served in the US Army stationed in France from 1960-1966. On July 15, 1967 he married Bernice Cobbins in St. Louis, Mo.
Leroy served as an accountant in his career, but he was a life-long learner, educating himself and receiving certification in several trades. In his spare time he enjoyed gardening, fishing, carpentry, photography, drawing, playing guitar, watching westerns, mysteries, National Geographic, and The History Channel. He was a member of the Zion Park District Golf Team. He also enjoyed refurbishing antique furniture.
Leroy accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Arkansas.
He is survived by his wife Bernice; daughters: Angela (James) Staples, Joi (Mark) Dodley; grandchildren: Tiffany, Joshua (Ashley) and Micah Staples, Brandi (Kevin) Fluellen, Miles Long-Dodley, Kennedy Long-Dodley, Meghan (Jo) Ripoche; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Lizzie Harmon and Bessie Cain; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and special cousins: The Walker and Shannon Family in St. Louis, and friends like family: Mary and Treva Cain, Eunice Young, Sheila Showell, Tamala McKinney, Emma Jean, Steve Tatum, and Dr. Lewis Dodley Sr.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Ruby P. Lewis.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 7, at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 2500 W 30th St. Zion, IL.
