Jay A. Sawvell, Jr., 75, of Christopher, IL formerly of Lake Villa, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, IL. He was born February 15, 1937 in Iowa City, IA. On May 21, 1960 in Waukegan, Jay married Donna Salzman.
Survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Donna Sawvell; two daughters, Joanna (Timothy) Vos of Burlington, WI and Yvonna (David) Mills of Antioch, IL; one brother, Paul (Gerene) Sawvell of Fayette, IA; seven grandchildren, Amanda Onstad, Britan Onstad, Brittany Vos, Cassandra Vos, Samantha Mills, Cassandra Mills, Coti Mills and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jay A. and Dorthy (Douglas) Sawvell, Sr.; one daughter, Glenda Sawvell; two sisters, Grace Nelson, Marion Wilson and one brother, Alfred Sawvell.
Jay was a United States Air Force veteran and retired from the Great Lakes Illinois Post Office after many years of service. He was a member of the Lake Villa United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. Jay became a certified lay speaker and began to give sermons at different nursing homes in the Lake County area. After moving to Christopher, IL, Jay and Donna became members at the Valier United Methodist Church and Jay helped fill in for pastors when they were not available for services. Jay was ordained in 2011. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed camping.
Visitation is Monday, April 2, 2012 from 10am-11am at WARREN FUNERAL HOME, 1475 N. Cemetery Rd., Gurnee. Funeral services are 11am at the funeral home with Pastor Richard Wagner officiating. Burial at Warren Cemetery & Mausoleum, Gurnee.
