George C. Behrens, 82, of Palatine, formerly of Gurnee, passed away on Monday, September 5, 2011 at Lexington Health Care in Wheeling. He was born on August 18, 1929 in Chicago. On September 12, 1984 in Glenview, George married Jo Heim.
He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Jo Behrens; children, Laura (Wayne) Nemetz of Montgomery, IL, Kent (Tracy Bohrofen) Behrens of Omaha, Nebraska; step-children, Stephen (Maryse) Heim of California, Linda (Gary) Pavlik of Inverness, IL and Michael (Debbie) Heim of Aurora, IL; sister, Barbara Kordenat of Ohio; grandchildren, Jennifer (Steven) Clymer, Jeffery (Kristina) Nemetz; step-grandchildren, Jennifer Pavlik, Stephen Pavlik, Meagan Heim and Courtney Heim; great-grandchildren, Ryan Benson, Noah Benson and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Christopher and Grace Isabelle (Pond) Behrens and his first wife, Jane Behrens.
George retired from Western Electric after more than twenty years of service. In his retirement he worked at Ace Hardware in Gurnee and then at Heather Ridge Golf Course as a starter. George was a member of the Gurnee American Legion for many years. He loved woodworking, especially making birdhouses and loved gardening, growing roses in particular.

A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2011 from 10:00am until 11:00am at WARREN FUNERAL HOME, 1475 N. Cemetery Rd., Gurnee. A memorial service will take place on Saturday at 11:00am at the funeral home following the gathering. Pastor Brad Davick will officiate the services. Inurnment will follow at Warren Cemetery, Chapel of Peace Mausoleum, Gurnee.
