Effie Lee "Pepper" Coburn, 71, of Zion went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 4, 2011 in Zion with her husband by her side. She was born on August 14, 1940 in Augusta, Arkansas. In 1960, Pepper married John L. Coburn. She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband of 51 years, John; four children, Steven, Sr. (Defia) Coburn, Mary "Lisa" (Eddie, Sr.) Kynard, Ricky, Sr. (Leshone) Coburn and Johnny, Sr. (Verlin) Coburn; fifteen grandchildren, Stephanie, Steven, Jr., Simone, Sydney, Daryl, Anthony (a special grandson she raised), Rachel, Eddie, Jr., Nykiedra, Ricky, Jr., Johnny, Jr., Brittany, Dexter, Corenia and Jessica; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Elatrice Walls, Hattie Balentine and Joann Ivory; three special sisters-in-law, Sally Harris, Gloria Coburn and Martha Coburn; special brother-in-law, Joseph, Sr. (Mildred) Coburn; special niece, Jacqueline Harris and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Isaiah and Lucille (Dickens) James; two brothers, I.H. James and J.H. James; eight sisters, Beatrice Baines, Alice Carter, Vera Crump, Minnie Childress, Christine Friar, Carrie Curry, Irma Smith, Catherine James and one great-grandson, Brandon Lamar Gully. Pepper and John owned three dry cleaning businesses throughout their lives, J & R Cleaners in Waukegan, Jiffy One and Atomic Laundry & Dry Cleaning both in North Chicago, and New Look Landscaping in Lake County. Pepper was also a wonderful cook and worked at Mary Stacks in North Chicago for many years. She loved her family dearly and raised many children and grandchildren. She will be forever missed and always loved by her family. Memorial donations would be greatly appreciated and may be made to Sally Harris in loving memory of Pepper. Funeral services will be Friday, September 9, 2011 at 11:00 am with one hour of visitation prior to services from 10:00 am - 11:00 am at Warren Funeral Home, 1475 N. Cemetery Rd., Gurnee. Bishop Joseph Coburn, Sr. from All Nations Church of God in Christ in Waukegan will officiate the services.
