DeVere P. Harmon
September 22, 1927- June 30, 2023
DeVere Phillips Harmon of Johnsburg, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 30, 2023, at the age of 95. He was born on September 22, 1927, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. DeVere enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945 and served until 1948. He took pride in being a World War II Veteran. He then went on to serve a proselytizing mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from 1948 to 1951. On June 24, 1952, in Marion, Virginia, DeVere married Frances Marie Hall and they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on December 30, 1952. They were married for 59 years before Frances passed on April 6, 2011. DeVere found joy in learning. He attended the University of Idaho Southern Branch, the Milwaukee School of Engineering, and East Tennessee State University. He enjoyed the many jobs he had in the electrical engineering field. DeVere felt blessed to serve others through his various roles he had at church.
DeVere is survived by his one son, Ronald D. (Mindy) Harmon of Johnsburg, Illinois; four grandchildren, Amalie E. (John) Henrichsen of Murray, Utah, Justin R. (Allison) Harmon of Pocatello, Idaho, Aaron P. (Kailley) Harmon of Bull Valley, Illinois, and Lindsay M. Harmon of Johnsburg, Illinois; six great-grandchildren, Emmett, Kinley, Finn, Asher, Odden, and Eli; one brother, Gordon (Jackie) Harmon of Pocatello, Idaho, two sisters, Gloria (Michael) Nemelka and Susanne Hunsaker, both of Salt Lake City, Utah; one sister-in-law, Opal Ratcliffe of Fort Gay, West Virginia, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wendell Vernon and Lucile Jane (Phillips) Harmon, his eternal wife, Frances Marie Hall Harmon, one son, Vernon Roy Harmon, two sisters, Fannie Christensen and Joanna Turner, three brothers-in-law, Gale Christensen, Merlin Turner, and Dale Hunsaker.
DeVere enjoyed taking care of his family and others around him. He touched so many lives with his kindness, patience, and service. He will always be loved and missed by family and friends. DeVere’s family finds peace in knowing that he has been reunited with his loving wife and other relatives that have preceded him in death.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2023, from 9:30am until 10:30am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 315 McKinley Ave., Lake Villa, Illinois,1-(779) 800-2362. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 am at the church with Bishop Rick Cox officiating. Entombment will follow at Warren Cemetery, Chapel of Peace Mausoleum, 1495 N. Cemetery Road (located on the northwest corner of the intersection of Tri-State Parkway and Cemetery Road) Gurnee, Illinois 60031. Memorial donations may be made to the family.
