Alford S. Garrett, the eldest of four children, was born May 21, 1926 to the union of the late Elijah and Lucy Mae Garrett. Having grown up in Fort Payne, Alabama he joined the United States Army and served in the Korean Conflict. After four years of service, he received his honorable discharge and returned to Fort Payne, Alabama where he soon united in holy matrimony with the late Willie D. (Greathouse) Garrett. Soon after their union, the couple moved to Waukegan, Illinois where they raised four children. A devoted son, husband, son-in-law and father, he worked many years as a custodian at Ferry Hall School while also working for the Goodyear Tire Company where he continued to work until it closed. He left his job at Ferry Hall and began working at the American Jeep Corporation (formally known as American Motors) where he retired in 1989. With a gentle, warm, loving spirit he was never one to complain and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. On Saturday, February 6, 2010, Alford S. Garrett was called home, leaving to celebrate his life, one brother - Elijah Garrett of Fort Payne, Alabama. Four children - Rebecca (Reginald) Hunt of Waterford, Michigan; Sarah (Garnell) McAllister of Beach Park, Illinois; Duane (Tammie Brunner) Garrett of Genoa, Wisconsin and Gregory (Carol Lyons) Garrett of Rockford, Illinois. Fourteen grandchildren. One Godson - Glenn Johnson of North Chicago. Two goddaughters - Debra Hanna of Chicago, Illinois and Lenora Woods of Waukegan, Illinois. Two sister-in-laws - Ruby J. Ware and Dewatha Greathouse of Waukegan, Illinois. One "special" daughter-in-law - Lynn Garrett of Waukegan, Illinois, his special niece - Jacqueline Giggetts of Waukegan, Illinois and two "dear friends" - Helen Ross of Waukegan, Illinois and Ronald Conver of Hanford, California along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, two siblings, two brother-in-laws, three sister-in-laws, and his wife of 50 years. His memory will remain embedded in the hearts of many and he will be greatly missed. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at 12:00 pm with one hour of viewing prior to services at Warren Funeral Home. The Rev. Marvin Bembry will officiate. Entombment will follow at Warren Cemetery, Chapel of Peace Mausoleum, Gurnee.
